His name was James Burton and he had planned and developed large parts of London, including the Regents Park area. The site he selected for the new town was a few miles to the West of Hastings and included a little valley which ran down to the then deserted sea shore and flat land at the foot of the cliffs. The new and unique resort of St.Leonards was born. The Highlands Inn is a wonderfully imposing building constructed over 150 years ago from local quarried stone. Originally, it is believed, the Highlands was a Summer residence for Queen Victoria who was a regular visitor to the new town of St.Leonards-on-Sea.
