Ashfield House was built in the mid 1800s when the British empire was approaching its zenith. Queen Victoria reigned and Disraeli and Gladstone were the political heavyweights of the day. Gladstone was a guest at the hotel when Liberal MP for Wigan, John Lancaster, was the owner.
